Niagara University's Theater department opens a two-week run of "The Pirates of Penzance," a comic opera from Gilbert and Sullivan this week at the new Leary Theater on campus.

According to director Amanda Lytle Sharpe, the group has adopted the version to fit with modern audiences, some of whom have found a renewed appreciation for musical theater.

Opening night is tonight at Niagara and shows run through Sunday this week and next.

Also, the theater department holds one of its biggest fundraisers on Saturday. The Friends of Niagara University Theater Gala starts at 4 p.m. with a dinner to follow at Niagara Falls Country Club.
