Injured Sheriff's deputy was Newfane's Gerhardt

Newfane's Allen Gerhardt was the Niagara County Sheriffs Deputy who was critically injured while responding to a call for aid from another officer who was chasing a man on foot Monday morning. Gerhardt lost control of his vehicle on Lake Road and struck a guard rail.

The 36-year-old deputy and Iraq war vet was taken by helicopter to Erie County Medical Center where he remains in the trauma unit with severe injuries. He'll be sedated for a few days, according to Sheriff Jim Voutour.

Gerhardt has been with the department for two years and has three children. He was a Parks Police officer and has also been a pilot with the New York Army National Guard.

Todd Hauser was the man who being sought at the time of Gerhardt's crash. He has since been apprehended and is facing DWI charges.
