A pair of Niagara County Sheriff's Deputies are being credited with saving the life of colleague Allen Gerhardt on Monday.

Jonathan Andres and Shawn Grapes used their belts as tourniquets to stop the flow of blood after the Newfane man was injured in a crash.

Gerhardt was assisting on a call in the Town of Porter when he lost control of his vehicle. He hit a guard rail, and according to reports, parts of both legs were severed.

The 36-year-old deputy and Iraq war vet was taken by helicopter to Erie County Medical Center. He had surgery late Tuesday night. According to Sheriff James Voutour, the doctors are pleased with the results and he's in stable condition in the hospital's ICU unit.
