Niagara and Orleans Counties are under an excessive heat watch from noon to 7 p.m. and the state's Office of Emergency Management is offering New Yorkers ways to beat the heat.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun in an air-conditioned room and wear light-colored clothing to lessen the chances of heat related problems.

Non-essential appliances can also be turned off to avoid putting strain on the power grid and the state reminds residents who want to keep the AC running to conserve energy by setting it at no lower than 78-degrees.

Also, Rapids Volunteer Fire Company will have both halls open as cooling stations and will have firefighters checking on elderly residents.
