The first-ever class from the new Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy at Niagara University graduated on Monday in a ceremony at the Castellani Art Museum.

A total of 17 recruits were honored, including some who will work with the Niagara County Sheriff's office, and other units throughout the county. Lockport had one graduate, William Jones, while Barker had a pair in Nicholas LoCicero and Matthew Lutey.

There were also a few pre-employment recruits, those who've yet to be hired by local agencies. Sheriff James Voutour said this is an idea that's been overdue.

A full class of pre-employment recruits will be started at Niagara this fall.
