Lockport officials happy with recycling progress

Although it turns just two months old on Saturday, the city of Lockport's privatized garbage service has been an unmitigated success, according to officials.

Originally, organizers were hoping to get about three and a half tons of recyclables each day, but the city is often getting more than seven tons per day ... Lockport Mayor Michael Tucker said he's been pleased with the city's eagerness to embrace the new system, especially since it was such a hot-button issue during the recent election. 

Tucker added that city residents will need to get used to change. Officials add that not only does the city save on landfill costs, but it earns a small sum for selling recyclables ...
