The U.S. Department of Justice is suing Niagara County over its treatment of a pregnant female corrections officer in 2007.

The lawsuit filed in Buffalo federal court accuses the county of discriminating against Officer Carisa Boddecker by forcing her to take an unwanted leave of absence.

Boddecker had sought to be transferred to a position that did not involve contact with inmates instead of the forced leave of absence.  The suit alleges that the county violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on sex or pregnancy.
