There's a new addition to the fleet of boats owned by the Lockport Locks and Erie Canal Cruises, and it comes courtesy of the Thousand Islands.
A two-story paddleboat pulled into the lower canal this week, and after getting fixed up throughout the summer it should be available for weddings and parties by August.
With a full bar on the upper and lower decks, the boat was previously known as the Bonnie Belle when it ran tours in Alexandria Bay, but it will be renamed the Lockview VI after being fully refurbished this summer.
Matt Manson of the cruises said the journey to get to Lockport was an interesting one.
"It took them six days to get her through the lake, then get her through the canal to get her here," Manson said. "She was too tall to make it underneath the bridges, so they had to cut down the canopy, cut down the captain's quarters."
In a move reminiscent of the song that helped add to the Erie Canal's mystique, everyone had to get down when the boat hit low bridges.
"She has a four-foot steering wheel, so when they'd go under the lower stuff, they'd actually have to take the steering wheel right off," Manson said.
The total capacity will be around 200 when the boat is fully rebuilt.
