NCCC's culinary school could produce 'cooking war'

One of the hot topics in recent months has been the NCCC's Culinary Institute in the old Rainbow Mall. The school has brought new life to a building that had been dormant for years.

That's great for Niagara Falls, but it could create a cooking war of sorts between NCCC and Erie Community College, which has a culinary program of its own.

In fact, about 400 students are registered for classes this fall at NCCC and that number is expected to jump to a thousand within a few years.

Dan Miner is a reporter for Buffalo's Business First and he said ECC has been paying attention to its neighbors to the north.

"ECC is keenly aware of this and they're keenly aware of how important their culinary program is to their mission," Miner said. "They're direct competitors for an increasing small pie and I would be surprised if you didn't see some sort of measure of enhancement to ECC's either facilities or programs."

State Senator George Maziarz has been trying to attach the governor's new Tax Free NY program to the Rainbow Mall.
