Wilson's Jastrzemski: Dredging plan isn't enough

Although it was a great holiday weekend for boating, folks who use Wilson Harbor are hoping they can continue to dock there in the future.

Because silt continues to build up in that harbor, portions of that area are currently unusable.

A dredging project is expected to help with some of the problems, but Town of Wilson Supervisor Joe Jastrzemski says the current project being proposed isn't enough.

According to Jastrzemski, one of the problems with is that fewer dock spots make it tougher for Canadian visitors to get to a video phone border entrance and he said the hassle has started to turn visitors from the north away.

"They're only going to do a small portion of it. That's not going to solve the problem," Jastrzemski said. "We need the whole federal channel to be dredged."

He also said that one local business owner lost about $100,000 in business just last year because of the issue.

Dredging is expected to start next summer.
