The next hurdle to a proposed ice arena in downtown Lockport was cleared on Tuesday when the city's zoning board approved a number of variances.

That two-rink project on Chestnut and Market Streets is still slated to open in the fall of 2014 and work is expected to start soon after the final Canal Concert of the year on August 23.

That project is now just a few more signatures away from getting a full green light.

The rinks were expected to cost roughly $14 million, but the cost has been scaled back to about $10 million.
