The Town of Lockport's prime retail corridor might get a new look by as soon as late next year.
The town has applied for Federal Transportation Enhancement Program grants that will be announced soon. If the town gets the grants, it will undergo a major streetscaping project
The idea is to add medians, crosswalks, different street lighting and landscaping in the Transit North Historic Canalway Corridor and Dave Kinyon of the Town of Lockport IDA says this might only be the start.
He says those improvements could lead to more retailers.
"We see the opportunity to use the streetscape project to help leverage another $30 million in private sector investment," Kinyon said. "Our analysis indicates the ability to generate another roughly 570 jobs when this is fully built out."
Kinyon added that the grants for the streetscaping will be announced this fall, and that would mean design work would get underway next year and construction on the project could start in late 2014 or 2015.
